How to Spot an Online Chat Scam Before It Costs You
The vast majority of people you meet in random chat are just there to talk. A small number are not, and they tend to follow the same playbook. Learning that playbook is the best protection you have. Here is how the most common online chat scams work and how to catch them early.
The story moves too fast
Scammers rush the emotional timeline. They profess strong feelings, invent a crisis, or claim a deep connection within minutes. Real relationships take time. Speed is a warning sign.
It always comes down to money
Almost every scam eventually asks for money. It might be a stranded traveler, a medical emergency, a customs fee, or a can't-miss investment. The details change, the ask does not. Never send money to someone you met online.
They want to leave the platform
Scammers like to move you somewhere with fewer safeguards. If someone quickly pushes you to a private messaging app or asks for your number right away, be cautious.
Requests for photos or codes
Be alert if a stranger pressures you for revealing photos, or asks you to read out a verification code you received by text. Both can be used against you. Never share codes with anyone.
Too perfect to be true
Profiles that seem flawless, stories that line up too neatly, and people who agree with everything you say can all be bait. Healthy conversations have friction and imperfection.
What to do about it
If you spot these signs, do not argue or explain. Simply skip or report the person and move on. You lose nothing by ending a suspicious chat, and you protect yourself by doing it early.
